Summary
Stress is currently reported as one of the main causes of somatic and mental diseases. The mutual influence of the nervous and immune systems is well known. The effects of the impact of stress on the immune system depend on its duration and severity. This study focuses on a review of contemporary theories concerning the issues of stress. This article presents the concept of Lazarus and Folkman´s transactional model of stress. The article focuses also on the Antonovsky´s salutogenic approach which emphasizes the role of the sense of coherence and the Hobfoll´s conservation of resources theory. The role of positive emotions and health potentials in the process of maintaining and returning to the bio-psycho-social balance i.e. full health has also been presented.
